John Cena was a mainstay on WWE programming for years, but it’s been a while since fans have seen the 16 time WWE World Champion. Cena last competed when he was defeated by Bray Wyatt at WrestleMania 36, and he has yet to return to WWE. However, it’s been rumored that John Cena could be returning to kick off a feud with Roman Reigns which would lead to a match at SummerSlam.

It seems that Cena’s status for the pay-per-view may be in doubt as Variety is reporting that Cena has been cast in the movie “Argylle” which is set to start filming in Europe in August.

It’s not clear at this point in time if the movie will start shooting before or after the SummerSlam pay-per-view on August 21st, so it will be interesting to see if the schedule does impact a potential return for Cena.

The Rock has previously stated in the past insurance issues tied to his movie productions have prevented him from returning to the ring, and John Cena noted earlier this year that he wouldn’t be at WrestleMania 37 due to COVID-19 protocols he had to follow for the “Peacemaker” TV series.

John Cena did confirm a few weeks ago during an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon that he will be returning to WWE, but he does not know when. Stay tuned for more updates on Cena’s status and WWE SummerSlam as they become available.
