John Cena and The Rock spent an entire year building up their rivalry before they finally clashed at WrestleMania 28, and it was The Rock who picked up the victory in their first encounter. Cena and The Rock went on to face off once again at WrestleMania 29 where Cena defeated The Rock to become WWE Champion.

On screen The Rock and Cena made it clear that they didn’t like one another, and during an appearance on the Under the Ring Pro Wrestling Podcast, former WWE writer explained what was really going on behind the scenes.

“That was a journey, to work on that angle for three years with both of them. Obviously Rock vs. Cena, on paper that’s box office, and in reality that’s box office. But the fact of the matter is they weren’t on the same page on the beginning, and it was real life animosity between them that obviously has since dissipated, and they’re really good friends now.”

Gewirtz went on to say that even though things were heated between The Rock and John Cena he thought that the two of them could be good friends if they could put their differences aside.

“It was heated. I was literally in the middle of them in rooms, trying to be like ‘You guys, if you just got to know each other you’d be such great friends.’”

It seems that The Rock and Cena are on good terms now as Cena recently revealed some important advice he received from The Rock when he was breaking into Hollywood and you can get more on that here.
