WWE Films newest movie, “The Resurrection of Gavin Stone” had a somewhat lackluster opening weekend at the box office as it went against films like XXX 3, The Founder, and the latest M. Night Shyamalan movie Split.

Gavin Stone made a reported 1.4 million dollars at the box office. Although this is a low take-in, the film only cost an estimated 3 million dollars to produce. Therefore, it is easy to see how this film might eventually come out ahead with the rest of its theatrical run and subsequent digital and DVD release.

As we reported last week, the earliest reviews of the movie were somewhat positive calling it a lighthearted and wholesome comedy with evangelical themes. However, as more reviews began to come in the film’s approval rating slipped. Rotten Tomatoes currently gives the movie a 42% critic rating, although the audience rating is a remarkable 94%. Even though Metacritic is currently giving the movie 36 out of 100 based on 5 critic reviews.

The Resurrection of Gavin Stone tells the story of a washed-up former child star who is sentenced to community service and finds himself placed in a huge church to work off his time. During the film he ends up landing the role of Jesus in the annual Passion Play.

Brett Dalton, who plays titular character is also known for his work on Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D where he portrayed Grant Ward aka Hive. Neal Flynn, known for his work on television comedies such as Scrubs, and more recently starring as the patriarchal character in ABC’s The Middle also stars in the film as Gavin’s father. Shawn Michaels makes his theatrical debut and supplies some comedic relief as well.
