It’s been a long time since ECW closed its doors, but nevertheless the brand is still iconic to this very day. There are many fans who remember ECW fondly as one of the most talked about wrestling promotions of its time.
ECW had its own thing going on, but it certainly wasn’t unheard of to see crossover between ECW and WWE back in the 90s. ECW names would appear on WWE programming and names like Al Snow and Jerry Lawler would appear on ECW programming. Tommy Dreamer recently discussed the cross promotion on Busted Open Radio and he noted that at one point Paul Heyman tried to get The Rock in ECW.
“Real, real cool revolutionary stuff. I remember Paul [Heyman] being like, ‘Give me that guy.’ That guy was The Rock. They were doing nothing with him. Paul saw something with him, even back then, and Vince wouldn’t let him go. Would that have been awesome to have The Rock under the ECW Original banner? Yes, but it didn’t happen.”
Ultimately The Rock didn’t end up appearing in ECW, but as we all know he did end up becoming one of the biggest wrestlers of all time, so it’s safe to say that everything worked out alright for him.
