The last few months have been eventful for the title picture on Raw to say the least. Jey Uso defeated Gunther to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 41 back in April, and Gunther recently defeated Jey to win the title back a few weeks ago.

During this week’s episode of Monday Night Raw, Goldberg returned and it was confirmed that Goldberg will be challenging Gunther for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at Saturday Night’s Main Event next month.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that when the decision was made that Jey Uso would be winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship it had already been decided it would be a short reign, and that Jey would drop the title back to Gunther.

It’s not clear at this point in time if Raw in Phoenix was always the plan for Jey Uso to drop the title, but it was always supposed to happen before Goldberg’s retirement match which was planned to go head to head with AEW All In on July 12th.

Jey Uso managed to pick up a big win in the first round of the King of the Ring tournament on Raw this week. He will now go on to face Cody Rhodes in the semifinals, and the winner of the tournament will get a title shot at SummerSlam.
