Last month John Cena made history when he defeated Cody Rhodes to become a 17 time WWE World Champion on the Grandest Stage of Them All. Shortly after WrestleMania, Randy Orton made it clear that he had his sights set on John Cena and Cena defended his Undisputed WWE Championship against Orton at Backlash in St. Louis on Saturday night.

Early on in the match John Cena tried to shake Orton’s hand. As Orton went for the handshake Cena poked Orton’s eye. Orton responded by doing the same to Cena. After a few minutes John Cena tried to leave, but Randy Orton chased him down the ramp and got him back in the ring.

At one point Orton went for the RKO, but Cena countered with the Attitude Adjustment. As Cena was dropping Orton for the Attitude Adjustment, Orton reversed it into the RKO at the same time and they both took each other out when they hit the mat.

They went punch for punch then Cena hit another Attitude Adjustment out of nowhere. Orton kicked out at two. Randy Orton managed to finally connect with the RKO as Cena was going for a shoulder tackle, but Cena rolled away before Orton could cover him.

The Viper went for the punt. Cena dodged it then connected with another Attitude Adjustment for a two count. As Orton was struggling to get up Cena mocked him as he set up for a punt of his own. Orton dodged it then went for the RKO. Cena pushed Orton into the referee then hit the Attitude Adjustment again while the referee was down.

John Cena smiled and did a shushing motion at the crowd as he grabbed the Undisputed WWE Championship belt. As he brought the belt in the ring Orton hit Cena with the RKO. John Cena kicked out at two then rolled out of the ring.

Randy Orton cleared off the announce table. He argued with the ref as Cena hit him from behind and sent Orton into the referee. John Cena tried to hit Orton with the Attitude Adjustment on the announce table. However, Orton got out of it and dropped Cena on the table with an Attitude Adjustment of his own.

The referee was still down, so Orton pulled a table out from under the ring then set it up on the floor. He dragged Cena to the table, but Cena fought back and slammed Randy into the steel steps. Orton then picked Cena up and hit him with another Attitude Adjustment through the table.

The Viper threw Cena in the ring as he set him up for the RKO. Cena stood up and Orton connected with the RKO as a ref ran down to the ring, but Cena kicked out at two.

As Randy Orton was getting up Cena grabbed the belt. He tried to hit Orton, but Orton ducked, so Cena accidentally hit the new ref instead. Randy connected with the RKO then Nick Aldis and other WWE officials ran down and tried to wake up the referee. Randy argued with Nick Aldis as the officials checked on the referee. Orton hit the RKO on Aldis and several other WWE officials.

As Cena was in the corner Orton got into position for the punt one more time. He charged at John Cena then R-Truth appeared out of nowhere and stopped Orton from connecting with the punt. R-Truth argued with Orton who hit Truth with the RKO and Cena followed up with a low blow on Orton.

John Cena then hit Orton with the belt and pinned him to win the match. After the match John Cena grabbed and mic then demanded that the music be cut. He said he doesn’t need music, he needs competition, and he doesn’t need the fans. Cena held up the belt as he told the fans to drink it in.
