There have been a number of notable retirements over the last year or so, and now it seems that another name is officially stepping away from in-ring competition.

Mercedes Martinez recently announced that she has unfortunately torn her ACL, and the injury will end mark the end of her in-ring career. She noted that this was set to be her last year as a full-time wrestler, but now her career is officially over due to the injury. The former ROH Women’s World Champion posted the following:

“I want to make this video because I didn’t want to write something. It was hard to put into words, so I think it’s just easier if it can come from the heart and let you guys know.

So we are just about 3/4 of the way into this last run tour, and about two weeks ago I injured my knee. Two doctors later, an MRI later, the prognosis is torn ACL. For most it’s probably not a career-ending injury, but for me it is. So I humbly and am heartbroken to even say this but that’s the end of my wrestling career.

This was the year, as everyone knows, that it was going to be my last year full-time, meaning that I wasn’t going to wrestle every weekend, not even once a month, maybe special occasions after this year. I wanted to give back to women’s wrestling. I wanted to do this my way and give 110% and give my body to wrestling.

And I did just that.”
