Over the weekend Oba Femi stepped into the ring to face off against Jey Uso in the King of the Ring finals, and ultimately it was Oba who defeated Jey to earn a guaranteed title shot at SummerSlam.
Oba Femi was expected to reveal which champion he would be challenging on Raw this week, but his promo was quickly interrupted by Brock Lesnar. It was then announced that Oba will forgo his title shot at SummerSlam so he can face The Beast Incarnate inside Hell in a Cell.
Dave Meltzer recently discussed the storyline on Wrestling Observer Radio and it was speculated that WWE wants to save Oba Femi vs. Roman Reigns for the Grandest Stage of Them All.
“He’s gonna get his championship match. I think it’s gonna be at WrestleMania. I think from a business standpoint, they got nothing bigger than Roman Reigns vs. Oba Femi, and that’s the WrestleMania match most likely.”
“They could just sit here and go like, ‘We gotta make a new star. Let’s put Oba over Roman Reigns at SummerSlam.’ They could’ve done it. But I think their mentality is, if he’s the guy, and they wanna make the guy, this is a weird thing. Before if you wanna make the guy, you figure out the time to make the guy, and you do it. Now you have to do it at WrestleMania, because if it’s SummerSlam it’s not strong enough, if it’s on a B pay-per-view, heavens no. So they’ve kinda created a weird system.”
At this point it remains to be seen if Oba Femi might cash in his title shot at some point after his match with Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam. One way or another Roman Reigns’ opponent has been decided as it was announced on Raw that he will step into the ring at SummerSlam when he defends the World Heavyweight Championship against Seth Rollins.
Stay tuned for updates.
