The Rock made his big return to WWE during Day 1 Raw last month, and The Great One teased a match with Roman Reigns. This week on Friday Night SmackDown, Cody Rhodes told Roman Reigns that he wouldn’t be coming for him at WrestleMania, and The Rock seemingly set up a match with The Tribal Chief when he came face to face with the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion in the ring.
Fightful Select is reporting that as of right now the plan for WrestleMania is The Rock vs. Roman Reigns and Seth Rollins vs. Cody Rhodes. However, nothing has been made official just yet and as always plans could potentially change.
Originally CM Punk’s title shot was planned to be set up at Elimination Chamber with CM Punk vs. Seth Rollins and Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns as the working plan for WrestleMania.
As of the afternoon of the Royal Rumble there were people in WWE who had claimed The Rock agreed to face Roman Reigns and there was also talk of Rock “Head of the Table” merchandise prototypes that weekend.
No one could make the order of operations make sense, but there are said to be many people in the company who are cautiously optimistic that WWE and TKO could pivot if the reaction doesn’t change.
People who spoke about the situation noted that The Rock pushed for the WrestleMania match and some thought that he was pushing to win the match. Regardless of plans for the finish multiple sources viewed this as a political move that TKO believes will generate more immediate money than Cody Rhodes vs. Roman Reigns would.
Sources on the creative team expect The Rock’s longtime friend Brian Gewritz to be heavily factored into The Great One’s creative plans moving forward.
The early word is that The Rock will be attempting to work a full match. There’s no word on if The Rock is open to wrestling beyond the match with Roman Reigns. It’s also being said that there were some concerns about The Rock working a WrestleMania main event length match after recent appearances.
Stay tuned for updates.
