Cody Rhodes won the Royal Rumble last weekend and after he picked up the victory he pointed to Roman Reigns seemingly to signal that he would be challenging The Tribal Chief at WrestleMania. However, it was made clear on SmackDown this week that WWE will be changing plans as the company set up The Rock vs. Roman Reigns for WrestleMania 40 instead.

PW Torch is reporting that by all indications Cody Rhodes did not prefer this change. It was also noted that Cody mentioned during the Royal Rumble post-show press conference that he hoped to finish his story before 2025, but added that it could happen on a different stage, not necessarily WrestleMania.

It’s also being said that the situation with The Rock changing WrestleMania plans is not what most people “in the trenches” in WWE both on and off the air would have preferred.

According to the report The Rock did “step in and hinder” the story WWE had been building up with a Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes rematch at WrestleMania 40.

Current plans call for Cody Rhodes to challenge Seth Rollins for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 40 with the match possibly main eventing night 1. It’s expected that The American Nightmare will finish his story at some point later this year.

Stay tuned for updates.
