It seems that every wrestler aspires to become a world champion, but everyone makes it to the top of the mountain. Luckily for Rey Mysterio he managed to capture a world title three times in WWE, the first of which he won at WrestleMania 22.
During a recent episode of Grilling JR, Conrad Thompson and Jim Ross discussed the 2006 No Way Out pay-per-view, and while talking about why Vince was reluctant to push Rey Mysterio as the company’s top star Ross noted that his size was an issue.
“I think Vince’s issue with Rey was one word: size. Nowhere had the top guy in WWE been of Rey’s size, at least in my tenure there, which began in ‘93, as I mentioned. Rey would be the smallest World Champion in the history of the company. I think that was Vince’s unsettling decision.”
“But was Rey over? Hell yeah, he was really over. His merch sales showed that. What you hear from the audience when he came out, you can tell that people loved him. They cheer for the underdog.”
It’s no big secret that Vince McMahon has been reluctant to push smaller wrestlers over the years, but one way or another it’s safe to say that Rey Mysterio has had a Hall of Fame worthy career.
