Due to the stipulation that was added to the match, Chris Jericho is now a SmackDown Live star due to the fact that he won the belt. AJ Styles recently earned the right to challenge the United States Champion at Backlash, and now WWE is hyping up their upcoming match. WWE posted a preview on WWE.com confirming the match has been added to Backlash, and Jericho is now officially a member of SmackDown. You can check out an excerpt below:
After emerging victorious in his showdown against Kevin Owens at WWE Payback, Chris Jericho will now put his United States Championship on the line against AJ Styles at WWE Backlash on May 21.
And now that The Ayatollah of Rock ‘n’ Rolla is a member of Team Blue, he must know that his newly captured United States Champion is in immediate danger. As one of the best Superstars in the squared circle today, Styles is no doubt looking to add the illustrious prize to his incredible list of accolades.
Although Jericho is currently being advertised for Backlash, it’s always possible that some sort of swerve will take place on SmackDown this week. Kevin Owens is owed a rematch after all, so he could always win the belt back.
As of right now Jericho is set to perform with Fozzy at Mainstage Morgantown in Morgantown, WV on Sunday, May 21, and Backlash is set to take place from the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, IL.
