Backlash kicked off in a big way as Bron Breakker defeated Seth Rollins in the opening match. As the action continued Trick Williams went on to defend the United States Championship against Sami Zayn in the second match of the night, and Lil Yachty accompanied Trick to the ring.
Trick Williams got a massive ovation from the fans in Tampa as he walked to the ring. Sami tried to attack Trick before the bell rang, but the referee got in the way and pushed him off then off then officially called for the bell.
The action quickly spilled to the outside and Sami threatened to hit Lil Yachty with the steel ring steps as Yachty held up a candy cane kendo stick.
Back in the ring Sami jumped off the bottom rope and leap frogged over Trick, but he acted as if his knee was hurt when he landed. Lil Yachty got up on the apron and distracted the referee then Sami grabbed the candy cane kendo stick and hit Trick with it. The referee turned around and counted the pin as Trick kicked out at two.
As the referee was checking on Trick, Lil Yachty hit Sami with the candy cane kendo stick. Trick followed up with a Trick Kick on Sami for a two count and Sami threw Trick to the outside and Sami attacked Yachty with the kendo stick. Trick followed up with a clothesline on Sami, but Sami countered as he hit Trick with a DDT on the steps.
Sami threw Trick back in the ring, but got distracted as he hit Yachty with a Helluva Kick on the outside. He went back in the ring and tried for a Helluva Kick on Trick as Williams connected with the Trick Shot to retain the title.
