Roman Reigns has been World Heavyweight Champion ever since he beat CM Punk at WrestleMania 42 back in April, and he successfully defended the belt against Seth Rollins at SummerSlam on Sunday. On the following episode of Raw, AAA General Manager Rey Mysterio approached The Tribal Chief and asked if he could run something by him.
Earlier today Rey Mysterio announced that next week a tournament will kick off featuring luchadores from Raw, SmackDown and AAA. The winner of the tournament will go on to challenge Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship at Raw in Mexico City on September 14th.
After the announcement was made there was a lot of talk among fans regarding who Roman Reigns could be facing, and it seems that WWE might have a specific name in mind at the moment.
While talking about the match on Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alvarez noted that El Grande Americano is the rumored opponent for Roman at Raw in Mexico City, but that is not locked in.
“I can tell you this guys – the rumored opponent, unconfirmed, not locked in, is El Grande Americano. That could certainly change. El Grande is scheduled to face Dom for the Mega Title at Triplemania. They got no problem beating that guy clearly. I don’t think Roman Reigns should beat El Grande. They should have some sort of schmoz finish, or they could just have him face Penta, or somebody. We’ll find out.”
The tournament to determine the next challenger for Roman’s championship will kick off on Raw next week. As of this writing WWE has yet to announce the competitors that will be entering the tournament.
Stay tuned for updates.
