King of the Ring was always one of our favorite pay-per-views/events. Tournaments are always fun in professional wrestling and they’re even more fun when they stand for something. King of the Ring was a tournament that was responsible for launching the careers of superstars such as Steve Austin, Bret Hart, Brock Lesnar, Kurt Angle and many more. After years of being a staple in WWE the tournament was used sparingly between 2006 and 2010. Here we are in 2014 wondering where it has gone and when it might come back because we know that this is the perfect time to resurrect it.
The Roster Is Primed For It
Like we mentioned earlier King of the Ring is the perfect opportunity for a WWE supertar that’s standing on the edge of greatness to break the glass ceiling and show the world what they’re made of. WWE has so many superstars on the cusp of reaching the next level at the moment and the roster looks better than it has in a long time. Guys like Cesaro, Barrett, Fandango, Ziggler, Big E, Cody Rhodes and even The Shield could use something to give them that little extra push. A King of the Ring win could be the exact push they need to show the world that they have a whole lot more than just potential.
Tournaments Build Credibility
All too often in recent years superstars have made it to the main event by cheating to get there. Sure, you can cheat to win a tournament but going through several matches in a short period of time to become the winner will make anyone look legitimate regardless of how they win. The great thing about tournaments is that it gives the company several chances to build new stars between winners and losers alike. You don’t have to become the King of the Ring to be the star of the tournament. Several hard fought matches can go a long way in making a career.
Summer Is The Perfect Season For It
The winter months are great for fans because you know that once the Royal Rumble happens in January, you’re on the road to WrestleMania. It would add more intrigue to the summer months if WWE used King of the Ring as a road to SummerSlam.
Let’s face it, no one wants to see Battleground in July. The card could be the best card in years but simply the name Battleground has already left a bad taste in the mouths of the WWE faithful due to the fact that it was such a joke of a pay-per-view last year. Replacing Battleground in July with King of the Ring gives the fans something to look forward to and it sets the winner up to make a big impact at SummerSlam.
The Title Situation
The big difference between last year and this year is that WWE only has one world title at the moment. This means less opportunities for guys who want a shot at a major title. Putting a guaranteed title shot on the line in a King of the Ring tournament instantly gets everyone hooked.
Money in the bank briefcases are fun but there’s usually not much of a struggle there. Most of the time the briefcase holder cashes in on a winded opponent and that’s that. It’s exciting but it’s hard to feel like the superstar who cashes in really earned the title. Watching someone go through an entire tournament to win a title shot then face the champion really makes you feel like they earned that title shot. It also puts the entire roster on an even playing field depending on how many spots are open in the tournament which gives fans the feeling that anyone can happen.
Anyway, those are our reasons why we think right now is the perfect time to bring back King of the Ring. What do you guys think? Sound off below.
I’d love to see the KotR back but only of its like the oringal tournament pay per view when the whole nights about the tournament…not broken up to Monday nights and only a few matches every week.
