Gunther has been one of the top stars in WWE for years now, and he’s made a name for himself by winning the World Heavyweight Championship twice, and ending the careers of Goldberg, John Cena and AJ Styles.
The Ring General spent most of his career wrestling under his real name, Walter, but Vince McMahon eventually changed his name to Gunther a few years after he signed with the company.
The name change left many people confused as to why the decision was made, and Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer recently reported that Walter’s name was changed to Gunther because he thought people might start calling him Wally.
“The reason for the change was Vince. He believed that people might start calling him Wally and that is not a name he wanted for a main event foreign menace heel.”
While people questioned the name change at first it seems to have all worked out as Gunther has established himself as one of the bigger names on the WWE main roster. He is set to compete at SummerSlam this weekend as Gunther will be going one on one with former SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis.
