Night 1 of the annual WWE SummerSlam premium live event emanated from US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota on Saturday night and the show kicked off with a big title match as Liv Morgan defended her WWE Women’s World Championship against Iyo Sky in the opening match.
Liv Morgan first won the Women’s World Championship when she defeated Stephanie Vaquer at WrestleMania 42, and Iyo Sky punched her ticket to SummerSlam when she defeated Liv in the Queen of the Ring finals. This was Liv’s first televised title defense since she won the title.
Early on in the match the action spilled to the outside and Iyo Sky held Green Shirt Guy’s hand as she tried to get on the barricade. However, Liv pulled her off then threw her into the barricade before throwing her back into the ring.
Liv Morgan then took control of the match for a while, but Iyo made a comeback and sent Liv into the corner with a big missile dropkick. She connected with the bullet train attack and Liv went to the apron. Iyo jumped through the ropes and sent Liv to the floor with a sunset flip powerbomb.
Iyo went to the top rope for a moonsault, but Roxanne Perez jumped on the apron and distracted the referee while Raquel Rodriguez pushed Iyo off the top rope.
Liv went for Oblivion and Iyo blocked it with a big boot then threw Liv over the top rope onto Raquel and Roxanne. Iyo went to the top and tried to toke them all out with a moonsault, but Liv got out of the way and rolled into the ring. Liv brought Iyo back into the ring with a hurricanrana as she was standing on the apron.
Morgan went to the top rope and Iyo followed her as she connected with a Spanish fly. Iyo connected with a backbreaker and Liv got to the corner. Sky tried for the bullet train again and Liv got out of the way. Liv tried for Oblivion and Iyo stopped her. Iyo connected with an Oblivion of her own for a two count.
Iyo Sky went to the top for another moonsault as Liv rolled away. Liv followed up with a Codebreaker from the second rope for a two count. Sky hit Liv with a German suplex on the apron then connected with a bullet train on the apron into the ring post. She went for another moonsault and Liv got her boots up.
Liv went for Oblivion, but Sky flipped out of it. Liv followed up a Codebreaker then finally connected with Oblivion for the win.
