It’s been over 15 years since CM Punk cut the infamous pipe bomb promo, and the promo still gets talked about to this very day. There’s no denying that the promo took CM Punk’s career to the next level and solidified him as a top WWE Superstar.
While talking about the promo on What’s Your Story? with Stephanie McMahon, Punk recalled how Vince McMahon told him to go out and air his grievances. He also noted that he had to trust himself when it came to what he wanted to say because he knew there were things Vince McMahon wouldn’t want him to mention.
The Second City Said then went on to reveal that Vince McMahon made sure Stephanie was mentioned in the promo.
“If I said, ‘Hey I wanna go out there and mention Paul and Brock,’ he’d be like, ‘No. Don’t mention them!’ Okay. So I didn’t. I wrote up this bulls**t, and I gave it to him, and he read it, and his only feedback was, ‘Oh, it was good. Good. Just make fun of Stephanie.’ And I was like, ‘Excuse me?’ He’s like, ‘Yeah, add her in there.’ And I was like, ‘Okay.’ And the funny this is people will still, you know the Twitter smart fans will still argue about it. Like, ‘Oh, it was approved, it was this.’ It was both.”
When talking about Vince McMahon’s reaction to the promo, CM Punk revealed that Vince McMahon said, “When I came back it was ‘I smell money,’ is what he said.”
Last week on Raw, CM Punk returned and defeated Sami Zayn to win the Undisputed WWE Championship. It’s been confirmed that he will be defending the title against Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam, and he will also be teaming with Cody to face Gunther and Sami Zayn at Saturday Night’s Main Event this weekend.
Stay tuned for updates.
