A single Money in the Bank win can take a wrestler to the next level in an instant and over the years fans have seen some interesting names win the Money in the Bank contract. Back in 2022, Matt Riddle competed in the men’s Money in the Bank ladder match, and he recently claimed during a Signed by Superstars virtual signing that originally plans called for him to win the match before Austin Theory was added.
“Wanna hear something else cool? I was supposed to win Money in the Bank but Vince (McMahon) really likes Austin Theory and literally hours before, they changed it and Austin was added in and threw me off the ladder. After I took two huge ladder bumps off the RKO and everything else and it’s like… But, I love Austin Theory and I’m happy for him. Keep killing it bro.”
Dave Meltzer recently discussed plans for the match on Wrestling Observer Radio and noted that while Matt Riddle was considered to be one of the potential winners plans were never 100% locked in.
“That did happen in the sense that Vince McMahon changed it to Austin Theory, but there were several (potential winners), it was never 100% anyone. They had not figured it out until the very last minute.
“Matt Riddle was absolutely one of the people, perhaps even the favorite, but it wasn’t like it was Matt Riddle and then changed to Austin Theory. It was ‘perhaps Matt Riddle’.”
