Night 2 of WrestleMania 42 featured a huge main event as CM Punk defended the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against Roman Reigns. Both competitors pulled out all the stops to put on an instant classic, but it was Roman Reigns who picked up the win and walked out with the gold.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that Roman Reigns was always supposed to come out on top as the champion as there are long-term plans for him in that position, which include a feud with Gunther.

However, there was an idea that was talked about which involved CM Punk beating Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 42, and then dropping the title to Reigns at Backlash. The idea was that Punk and Reigns would be “even” when the feud was over, which would protect Punk’s position, and Reigns would end up as champion. Ultimately the decision was made for Roman Reigns to defeat Punk and win the belt at WrestleMania.

It appears that CM Punk and Roman Reigns are done with each other for now as a match between CM Punk and Cody Rhodes for the Undisputed WWE Championship was teased on Raw this week.

Roman Reigns is also moving on to a new challenger as Jacob Fatu stepped up and challenged The Tribal Chief to a match for the World Heavyweight Championship at Backlash. Although the match has not been made official just yet it’s being reported that Reigns vs. Fatu for the title will almost surely main event Backlash.
