AJ Styles knows what it’s like to hold championship gold as he had two notable reigns with the WWE Championship. A few weeks ago Sami Zayn finally achieved his goal of becoming WWE Champion when he pinned Cody Rhodes at Night of Champions, but his reign came to an end after only nine days when CM Punk returned and defeated him to win the belt on Raw.
While talking about Sami dropping the title to CM Punk on the Phenomenally Retro Podcast, AJ Styles admitted that Sami dropping the title after nine days is odd, but encouraged everyone to wait and see how things play out moving forward.
“I’m hoping there is an actual reason. And from what I saw on the internet, the backstage with Sami after the match, he’s pretty pissed off. Let’s see where this story goes before we start getting mad about everything that’s going on. There is a story that’s happening, so before we get our panties in a wad and be as negative as we can, let’s see what happens. Because this may be a transition where Sami is a totally different character, and that might be what we need.
How long was Cody champion? And then how long’s Roman gonna be? Champions normally hold onto their titles a very long time, and the fact that Sami didn’t is odd and unexpected. Is that a bad thing that he lost it so quickly, but then comes back? I don’t know, man. We’re just gonna have to watch the show. These guys are smarter than I am when it comes to writing, so let’s just see where it is.”
