After winning the first ever Universal Championship match at SummerSlam, Finn Balor was forced to vacate the title due to injury on Raw.
Mick Foley announced that a series of matches would be held on Raw, and the winners would face off next week to crown a new Universal Champion. It was later announced that the winners would face off in a fatal 4-way.
Seth Rollins defeated Sami Zayn to qualify, Kevin Owens defeated Neville to qualify, and Big Cass defeated United States Champion Rusev to qualify. Roman Reigns and Chris Jericho battled for the last spot in the fatal 4-way in the main event of this week’s show.
Kevin Owens tried to help out his buddy Chris Jericho with a distraction in the main event, and Jericho went for a roll-up but Reigns kicked out. Reigns then tried for a spear, but Jericho reversed it into the Walls of Jericho and Reigns made his way to the ropes.
Owens then distracted Reigns again and Jericho hit the Codebreaker but Reigns kicked out. Roman and Jericho fought back and forth for a while and Owens tried to interfere again, but it backfired as Roman hit Jericho with a spear for the win.
Next week on Raw Seth Rollins, Kevin Owens, Big Cass and Roman Reigns will face off for the WWE Universal Championship in a fatal 4-way match.
