For decades John Cena was the face of the WWE, but his career officially wrapped up last year. In December of 2025, John Cena retired from in-ring competition when Gunther made him tap out at Saturday Night’s Main Event.
John Cena’s retirement tour was a major attraction for WWE in 2025 and a lot of people spent their hard earned money to see his final match in person. While there was a lot of hype leading up to his final match Cena recently confirmed that he thought he was going to end his career a different way.
During an interview with Metro, John Cena revealed that he originally thought the Firefly Fun House match with Bray Wyatt at WrestleMania 36 was going to be the last match of his career.
“Honestly, no kidding. I thought the Firefly Fun House was going to be the last match of my career. I really did think that the Firefly Fun House match was going to be the tail end, and that was kind of a meta journey for me through facing all of my demons, and then letting go.”
Even though Cena is no longer an active competitor he’s still a part of the WWE family. A few months ago at Backlash, Cena announced the John Cena Classic, and he has now confirmed that the details for the tournament have been worked out.
“I’m all in on the John Cena Classic. All the details are figured out. They want me to keep it a secret until we give the announcement. It’s like a new model of a car that we do this big reveal for. The car is ready. I just want to take the drape off, but we’ve got to wait.”
