John Cena officially retired from in-ring competition when he was defeated by Gunther at Saturday Night’s Main Event last year, but he still makes appearances on WWE programming from time to time.
A few months ago John Cena appeared at Backlash and announced the John Cena Classic. Details on the John Cena Classic are few and far between, but Cena noted that main roster stars will face off against NXT stars, and the winner of the John Cena Classic will be determined by the fans who will be able to cast their votes.
False Finish is reporting that WWE sources have indicated the company is currently looking at December 12th as a potential date for the John Cena Classic. However, as of right now the location for the event has yet to be determined.
Last month Cena shared an update on the John Cena Classic and noted that it’s a work in progress when he said, “I got to withhold the updates. What I can tell you is we are working forward, and I cannot tell you how excited I am about it. The event, what it stands for, I want to do something great for WWE fans toward the end of the calendar year. Man, I wish I could give you spoilers, but I’ve got to be loyal to my company.
What I can tell you is we’re working on it, and I am going to give you my absolute best. If an event is going to wear my name, especially in the WWE realm, I’ve always given my best to WWE. Then the Classic will be no less.”
