Over the last few years WWE has been positioning Gunther as a top star as he’s worked with some big names and he’s also a two time World Heavyweight Champion. Over the last year or so it seemed that WWE was trying to make Gunther unstoppable as he retired Goldberg in July, John Cena in December, and then AJ Styles in January of this year.
During a recent episode of his podcast AJ Styles was asked about criticism regarding WWE dropping the ball with Gunther after having him retire Goldberg, John Cena and himself. Styles noted that he thinks it’s fair to say while also defending the writers.
“It’s fair. It’s fair to say that. The more I think about it, I’m like, ‘Oh, freak. Okay. Yeah, I guess.’ It’s kind of a big deal, you know, getting rid of John Cena, right?
I don’t write the stories. Listen, again, I’ve said this, and I’ll say it again – I’d rather beat myself to death in that ring than be a writer for a show because you have to be smarter than everybody else, and it’s very hard to do week after week. So I give all the praise to those freaking guys who are able to do that and work with each other. It’s not as easy as you think.”
In recent weeks Gunther has been involved in a heated feud with SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis, and it was announced during the SummerSlam kickoff show that Gunther and Nick Aldis will go one on one at WWE’s biggest party of the summer.
