When John Cena’s retirement tour kicked off fans had a number of dream matches they were hoping to see. Cena vs. Edge was at the top of the list for many, but the possibility of that match happening seemed nonexistent due to the fact that Edge is currently working in AEW under his real name Adam Copeland.
Despite the fact that Copeland is signed to AEW some fans held out hope that some type of deal could be reached. During an interview with Ariel Helwani, Tony Khan was asked if WWE reached out to him about using Copeland as part of Cena’s retirement tour and he confirmed that they didn’t.
“No. Never say never in wrestling, because I would imagine they could always extend [John Cena’s] date past the end of the year. But no—Adam’s going to be here with us through the year.
Adam Copeland is a huge part of AEW, and I have so much respect for him. I really, really like Adam a lot, and I’m glad to have him here. Even though he’s away filming, he’s still with us and will continue to be.”
As of this writing John Cena only has two appearances left before he officially retires for good. It was confirmed on Raw this week that Cena will be defending the WWE Intercontinental Championship against Dominik Mysterio at Survivor Series, and he will go on to face the winner of The Last Time Is Now Tournament at Saturday Night’s Main Event on December 13th.
