For decades Vince McMahon was the man steering the ship for WWE and in order to make it to the top of the industry you had to get Vince McMahon to believe in you. There’s no denying that “Stone Cold” Steve Austin is one of the most iconic and well known WWE Superstars of all time, but it seems that it took a little while for Vince McMahon to get on board with the idea of pushing Austin to main event status.
Many people believe that the turning point for Steve Austin was when he defeated Jake Roberts to win the King of the Ring tournament then followed up by cutting his iconic Austin 3:16 promo. Roberts recently discussed Steve Austin’s ascent to the top of the card on the Cafe de Rene podcast and he said that Vince McMahon didn’t think Austin was a main eventer.
“Yeah, he’s shown his love several times man. I mean at the time nobody believed in him but me. Vince did not think he was a main eventer. And then he went out and cut that f**king interview and, you know, the rest was f**king history.”
Obviously Vince McMahon was wrong as Austin went on to become a pretty big deal and ironically his feud with Vince McMahon became one of the most memorable feuds in WWE history. Austin returned to the ring last year at WrestleMania 38 where he defeated Kevin Owens, and it was reported that WWE made him an offer to return this year, but it doesn’t look like he’ll be stepping into the ring at WrestleMania 39. Stay tuned for updates.
