As the saying goes professional wrestling isn’t ballet as things get physical from time to time. During the recent AEW Dark: Elevation tapings in Toronto, Athena faced off against Jody Threat, and Athena ended up working as the heel in the match after Jody got a big ovation from the Toronto crowd.
The match was very aggressive, and Fightful Select reports that at one point Jody Threat slipped during what was supposed to be her comeback. Threat reportedly got lost and asked Athena what was next then the match became even more physical. People who spoke on the match noted that even though Jody Threat was capable of handling the physicality, it shouldn’t have happened, and there should have been better communication.
It was indicated by people close to Athena that both women were approached by management after the match to make sure everything was ok. A source familiar with the situation said it should have been an opportunity to lead by example as opposed to letting it devolve. There’s no word on any type of confrontation between the two after the match, and those close to Athena believe the match went as it was supposed to with Athena playing the heel.
Jody Threat didn’t complain about how the match went, and it’s being said that she’s not big on situations like this as she generally tries to avoid the political aspect of the wrestling business.
