Luke Harper made his return a few weeks ago, but it’s pretty clear at this point that WWE doesn’t have any plans for him.
With no plans in place for him, Harper took to social media to publicly announce that he had requested his release, but it doesn’t look like WWE will be granting his request.
According to the Wrestling Observer Newsletter, Vince McMahon told Luke Harper in writing that he is not going to be released. Originally Harper was set to feud with Sami Zayn after Mania, but the decision was made to drop the feud.
It’s also being said that WWE made a call not to use Luke Harper after Vince McMahon saw his return.
Vince McMahon reportedly said that he doesn’t “get him” when it comes to Harper, and complained that he can’t do a southern accent, which was apparently something they wanted him to start doing four years ago.
Harper regularly pitched ideas for his return while he was out, and they were all shot down. He wasn’t booked anywhere after Fan Axxess, and out of the blue Vince McMahon wanted to know why he wasn’t booked for the battle royal at WrestleMania, so he was put in at the last minute.
After he was informed WWE wouldn’t be moving forward with a Harper/Zayn feud the day after Mania, he went home because he was told he wasn’t needed.
He was then told to come back on Tuesday for a match with EC3 the next day, and Vince McMahon thought the match was bad.
When asked which brand Harper would be drafted to during the Superstar Shake-Up, Vince reportedly brought up how he can’t do a southern accent, and the match with EC3, then made the decision not to put him on either brand.
