Kenny Omega has fascinated the world with his amazing ability in the ring and he doesn’t show any signs of slowing down. But this incredible entertainer was once starting his journey to the top.
Although he wrestled in various promotions for a bit he eventually found a home in New Japan Pro Wrestling. When Omega previously wrestled in Japan, it was pretty well known within the fan base that he was sharp with the native language. But Kenny said when he went to New Japan they wanted him to act like he couldn’t speak Japanese or at least act like he chose not to. Omega said they initially wanted to give him a gimmick like Steve Austin’s “Ringmaster” where he would be cold, calculating, and would always have a mouth piece.
Kenny recently spoke to Edge and Christian on their Pod Of Awesomeness about his earliest days as a part of New Japan’s famous wrestling stable, The Bullet Club. He also revealed how AJ Styles ended up being the leader of the famous New Japan stable.
“So I wasn’t supposed to be a focal wrestler. And for me, I thought it was really going to be a chance to shine especially now that before then my name had been in discussion to make me the leader of the Bullet Club and then right at the 11th hour, AJ [Styles] got freed up from his TNA contract so I thought wait a minute, AJ’s free we gotta do something, we’ll make him the leader of The Bullet Club so I kinda became the junior guy.”
“I was like, ‘okay if that’s the case I’ll just be the best darn junior guy I can be.’ It didn’t last very long and eventually, I was able kinda to do my own thing again but yeah. That was another sorta trial and error.”
