It’s always exciting when a wrestler from NXT gets called up to the WWE main roster, and in 2021 fans saw the debut of Rick Boogs on the SmackDown brand. Boogs has been getting a lot of attention lately as he returned to action a few months ago after spending 9 months on the sidelines due to injury.
During a recent episode of WWE 24, Rick Boogs talked a little bit about how his main roster call up happened, and he noted that everything came together after Vince McMahon saw him appear in an Old Spice commercial.
“Old Spice wanted someone that really looks like a professional wrestler but has like no TV equity. Luckily, they thought of me. That’s where my character work, all my time making videos on YouTube, shined through. Old Spice loved it, Vince McMahon saw it, and he was like, ‘Who is this guy? He’s a good actor. Call him up.'”
Last year at WrestleMania 38, Rick Boogs & Shinsuke Nakamura challenged The Usos for the SmackDown Tag Team Titles, but unfortunately Boogs suffered an injury during the match that took him out of action. So far he does not have a spot on the WrestleMania 39 card, but it’s been confirmed that he will be competing in the Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal on SmackDown this week.
