When Alexa Bliss put Becky Lynch through that table at TLC and captured the Smackdown Women’s Title it surprised a lot of people. Many have doubted the Columbus, Ohio native since she busted out into the WWE Universe as she pranced onto the stage at NXT looking like a blue fairy blowing pixie dust at the camera. But she turned out to be a legitimate threat, a compact bundle of ferocity really doing well with a finisher called the Sparkle Splash. Some were shocked when she was called up instead of names like Bayley or Asuka, but now she holds the blue brand’s Women’s Championship.
When the news broke that the two would meet in a steel cage, fans wondered if this could finally be Becky’s night to reclaim the title. Although they weren’t the first women to perform inside a steel cage, this is another example of the evolution in women’s wrestling that has taken place in WWE, as they were the main event of the night.
Alexa attempted the typical heel maneuver as she kept trying to escape the cage while Becky kept pulling her back into the fray throughout the early moments of the match. Alexa eventually catapulted Becky into the corner of the cage and Becky used this boost to start a climb of her own which was eventually stopped by Bliss.
In time they both ended up scaling the cage and walking on the top rope while they battled on. After driving Lynch’s head into the cage a few times, The Lass Kicker blocked Bliss and drove Alexa’s face into the top turnbuckle.
Bliss used the cage as offense, dropkicking Lynch and bouncing her body off of the cage. Alexa opened the door, but Becky blocked her. Becky jumped on the top turnbuckle and performed a missile dropkick on Bliss, then she started to climb. Lynch made it to the top of the cage and started to make her way down the other side until Bliss pulled her back over the cage by her hair.
The two fought on inside the cage and Becky got a close two-count after a devastating move off of the middle turnbuckle. With the door open, Becky attempted to crawl toward the door as Bliss pulled her back in. Sudden La Luchadora appeared at the door blocking Lynch’s exit. Becky pulled Alexa in the middle of the ring and performed a “Disarm-Her” on Bliss, but she as Alexa was about to tap, La Luchadora kicked Becky off of Alexa which gave Bliss the chance to perform a DDT on Lynch and secure the victory.
La Luchadora and Bliss stomped on Lynch until she was eventually able to fight the two of them off. Becky pulled La Luchadora’s mask off and revealed that the mystery woman was Mickey James.
Rumors had been circulating that James was returning to WWE television tonight, and it appears that she turned out to be the masked competitor as some had predicted. Now Becky Lynch will have a new obstacle on her way back to the Smackdown women’s championship.
