Andre the Giant fans will be happy to know that a documentary about the larger than life star is coming to HBO. WWE announced today that they will be partnering with HBO Sports and Bill Simmons Media Group to produce the documentary.

The documentary will dive deep into Andre’s upbringing in France and it will also focus on his unforgettable career with WWE, along with his other ventures in the entertainment world. Bill Simmons is set to serve as the executive producer of the film and he noted that this is a documentary that he’s been wanting to make for a long time.

“Going back to 2007 and 2008 when I was creating and developing ’30 for 30′ for ESPN, Andre’s story rode the top of every single sports documentary wish list I ever made,” said Simmons. “We always hear about unicorns these days – Andre was the ultimate unicorn. He’s a true legend. Everyone who ever crossed paths with him has an Andre story – and usually four or five. I’m delighted to join forces with Jason Hehir and WWE so we can capture Andre’s amazing story once and for all.”

At this point in time a release date for the documentary has not been announced, but given the timing of the announcement it seems likely that wrestling fans with access to HBO could be watching the film before the end of the year.

One man who worked very closely with Andre the Giant was Vince McMahon. Vince gave Andre a platform to showcase his talents and his WrestleMania 3 main event with Hulk Hogan is still one of the most talked about wrestling matches of all time. McMahon commented on the documentary noting that he will always value his friendship with Andre the Giant.

“For more than 20 years, Andre the Giant’s larger than life personality and unique charisma captured the imagination of fans around the world,” said WWE Chairman & CEO Vince McMahon. “I will always value our friendship, and I am proud to tell the story of the ‘Eighth Wonder of the World.'”

Andre may be gone, but his legacy lives on. Stay tuned for updates on the release date and title of the upcoming film.
