AEW ended 2023 with a bang as Samoa Joe defeated MJF to become the new AEW World Champion at the Worlds End pay-per-view last month. After the match was over MJF was seemingly written off TV when Adam Cole was revealed to be the devil and he was attacked by Wardlow, Mike Bennett, Roderick Strong and Matt Taven.

The Wrestling Observer Newsletter reports that MJF worked the match at Worlds End even though he was in great pain. It’s being said that MJF has a torn labrum and hip injury following the elbow drop from the top rope during his match with Jay White at Full Gear.

The shoulder injury is reportedly the most serious and MJF is hoping the shoulder will heal through rehab. The former AEW World Champion is trying to avoid surgery as it could potentially sideline him for an extended period of time. He was told if he does get surgery he could be out for months, or perhaps close to a year.

MJF was pulled from the roster on AEW’s website and he’s not currently being advertised for All In at Wembley Stadium. AEW is moving forward with the storyline that MJF is a free agent. Most believe that MJF quietly signed a new deal with All Elite Wrestling in 2022, but he has publicly denied that.

Stay tuned for more updates on MJF’s status as they become available.
