The Rock made his big return to WWE earlier this month for the Raw premiere on Netflix, and he also made another appearance the next night during NXT New Year’s Evil. There’s no denying that New Year’s Evil was a big show for the NXT brand as Giulia won the NXT Women’s Championship and Oba Femi won the NXT Championship.
Recently Oba Femi spoke to Cameron Hawkins of Uncrowned about climbing through the ranks in NXT, and he explained why being a big man is a lost art nowadays. Femi also revealed what The Rock said to him backstage at New Year’s Evil.
“I’ve come around at a very opportune time when big-man wrestling is not the main thing. It’s become like a niche, almost a lost art because everyone’s doing Canadian Destroyers and everyone’s high flying and everyone’s spring-boarding, trying to pop the crowd. … It’s refreshing that the fans get to see an Oba Femi who comes in and stays on the ground and is physical and fires up and is riled up. I think people miss that…
[The Rock] said, ‘Good job, great match. Can’t wait to see you on the main roster.’”
There’s currently no word on when The Rock will be returning to WWE programming as there’s been a lot of speculation regarding his status for WrestleMania. It’s been reported that WWE creative is moving forward with the idea that The Rock won’t be working WrestleMania this year, but plans can change at any time.
