You never know what will happen in WWE, especially when Rey Mysterio is concerned. After all, few people expected to see him at the Royal Rumble. Now it looks like Mysterio is working with New Japan Pro Wrestling because three teases for future matches were laid down during his recent appearance at Strong Style Evolved.
But fans still have hope Mysterio could be on his way back to WWE. SI reported a rumor that Mysterio could be chosen as Braun Strowman’s opponent, and although that doesn’t seem likely, stranger things have happened before.
After all, Mysterio and WWE have a great relationship so it’s kind of a when not if situation in regards to when he’s coming back. But he said performing for New Japan was on his bucket list and it’s likely that he’ll check that off.
The Dr. Of Lucha was recently on Wrestling Observer Live when the subject of Mysterio was raised. He had a very interesting and informed opinion on the matter that might be wise to take into consideration.
“I think when WWE sign him is their cycle of business which runs from roughly Survivor Series through WrestleMania. If they bring him in, they’re gonna bring him in on that cycle to peek for or work a match at WrestleMania and he could work infrequently until that point in time. Right now [WWE has] a very very strong WrestleMania card that he’s not on and it’s hard to say in the last 5, 10 years they’ve had a better card. Their ratings are what they are I mean the wrestling fans there are in the world are watching them.”
“[Mysterio’s] not necessarily the person they’re gonna need for the next six months. In my mind I think when they really look for use for him is something to add to and make special a WrestleMania card. When they bring him in and I expect that he will, I expect he will come back in some point in time when he’s healthy whether that’s November, December, January and work for next year’s WrestleMania.”
Therefore if you were looking forward to seeing Rey Mysterio pop in during the big show in NOLA, you might want to keep hoping. Because the Dr. Of Lucha doesn’t seem to think it’s going to happen this soon because WWE doesn’t need him.
Like I said, anything can happen in WWE. But with Mysterio showing up in New Japan like he did it might indicate that at least we’ll be getting to see Mysterio it just won’t be in a WWE ring until the time is right.
