2016 was a huge year for AJ Styles, and after his debut at the WWE Royal Rumble back in January, he quickly established himself as one of WWE’s top stars. AJ Styles is the current WWE Champion, and Styles also earned the honor of being Pro Wrestling Illustrated’s Wrestler of the Year. AJ Styles 51% of the votes for Wrestler of the Year in PWI’s annual Achievement Award balloting. The runner up behind AJ Styles was Roman Reigns with 14% of the votes.
AJ Styles also managed to score enough votes to win Match of the Year for his match with fifteen time World Champion John Cena at SummerSlam.
Roman Reigns had the unfortunate honor of winning the Achievement Award for Most Hated Wrestler of the Year. Roman scored 26% of the vote with Kevin Owens behind him at 19%. Roman likely won’t be too upset when he finds out, as he topped PWI’s annual top 500 list last year.
Other winners for Pro Wrestling Illustrated’s 44th annual Achievement Awards include Nia Jax (Rookie), Bayley (Inspirational), The Miz (Most Improved), Goldberg (Comeback), Charlotte Flair (Woman), Charlotte vs. Sasha Banks (Feud), Shinsuke Nakamura (Most Popular), The New Day (Tag Team).
