When Shinsuke Nakamura first debuted on the main roster he arrived with a lot of hype behind him. In recent years Shinsuke Nakamura has struggled to find his place on the card, and has been at times treated like an afterthought, much to the disappointment of Shinsuke’s fans.

In August of 2017 Shinsuke faced off against John Cena on SmackDown and during the match Shinsuke botched a move and ended up dropping Cena on his head.

Rich Stambolian of the Mat Men podcast recently discussed Shinsuke Nakamura’s status, and he speculated that the botch may have caused WWE to have second thoughts about pushing Shinsuke long term.

”AJ is the one that is so, so talented, he’s been around more that he clawed his way to his spot. With Nakamura, I want to say, it was that John Cena match where he dumped Cena on his head and somebody in the back went, hey you can’t hurt a top guy.”

A few years ago Shinsuke Nakamura discussed the botch with Gorilla Position, and he admitted that he thought his career was over when he got backstage after the match.

“I don’t know if I can tell this or not. Some people were upset backstage, not John, someone else. They were so p***ed off at me, like ‘Why did you do that?’ I thought my [WWE] career was finished that day, but everybody came to support me even John Cena. He said ‘It wasn’t his fault. It was my fault.’”

This week on Friday Night SmackDown Shinsuke Nakamura seemingly formed a new alliance with a debuting NXT star, and you can get more on that here.
