On Friday night Gunther defended his Intercontinental Championship against Shinsuke Nakamura in the main event on SmackDown, and both Superstars have been receiving positive reviews for their performance. It seems as if Gunther is being presented as a force to be reckoned with, but things could have gone differently for him under the previous regime.

Last month Gunther appeared on the July 4th episode of Monday Night Raw and he attacked R-Truth who was dressed up as Uncle Sam then destroyed him in a quick squash match. WrestleVotes is reporting that those who were in power at the time soured on Gunther following his appearance on Raw, and at one point the plan was to bury him.

There’s no word on what Gunther did to cause those in power to have a negative opinion of him, but if Friday’s episode of SmackDown is anything to go by it seems that the new regime doesn’t feel the same way.

With Shinsuke Nakamura now seemingly in his rearview it will be interesting to see who steps up and challenges Gunther for the Intercontinental Championship next. Stay tuned for more updates as they become available.
