John Cena has been making headlines recently for all the wrong reasons as the 16 time WWE World Champion received major backlash from fans in China after he referred to Taiwan as a country while promoting Fast & Furious 9. Cena responded to the backlash by apologizing to the people of China, but it seems that the response only served to create more controversy.

Andrew Zarian of the Mat Men podcast reported that John Cena’s apology was, “NOT going over well at WWE right now…” and some more information regarding the situation has come to light.

Zarian later replied to a comment talking about rumors of John Cena having backstage heat over the apology, and he went on to respond respond why he tweeted, “Disappointment is more the word I heard coming from some talent.”

It was also noted that the apology bothers WWE because the company didn’t issue it, and that a lot of the chatter from non executives was negative.

“The apology bothers [WWE] because they didn’t issue it. It was outside pressure that they have no control over.”

“A lot of the chatter from non executive level status was negative. Personally I don’t know what the boards opinion was but I have heard it’s not positive”

It’s rumored that John Cena will be returning to WWE programming in July when the company starts touring again. Stay tuned for more updates as they become available.
