Prior to his WWE return in 2017, Matt Hardy breathed new life into his career with the Broken Matt Hardy gimmick and the creation of the Broken Universe. However, when The Hardys returned to WWE they went back to working under their more traditional Team Extreme gimmick for a while before Matt ended up transforming into a similar character with a new name known as Woken Matt Hardy.
Matt Hardy ended up parting ways with WWE in 2020 and he originally debuted in AEW with the Broken Matt Hardy gimmick. Ultimately the Broken Matt Hardy gimmick was only used for a few months in AEW before Matt started using multiple gimmicks.
During a recent episode of The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy the status of the Broken Matt gimmick was addressed and Hardy indicated that if fans see it again then it will be different.
“If ‘Broken’ Matt comes back, he will be very different. It’ll be a different version of a ‘Broken’ Matt that I don’t think we’ve ever seen before; he’ll be much more suited to fit into the climate of AEW currently.”
