Chris Benoit’s career will forever be shrouded in controversy, but many people agree that his in-ring talent can’t be denied. Kurt Angle worked with Chris Benoit quite a few times, and at Backlash in 2001 the two rivals faced off in an Ultimate Submission match.

The Hall of Famer recently discussed the match on the Kurt Angle Show, and he noted that everyone involved was happy with how it came together.

“We were all happy. I enjoyed working with Chris and Vince, you know, said, ‘great job guys, again, great job.’ He said to me, I believe, ‘You guys always have great matches, and I’m very thankful.’ You know, he always said thank you after I wrestled my matches, and I thought that was really cool.”

The Ultimate Submission match had a 30 minute time limit, and the idea was that whoever had the most submissions at the end of the 30 minutes would win. However, Angle noted that he wish there was a clock on display during the match.

“I would still have done it (the submission stipulation). I love challenges. I believed in Chris and I that we would hit it off, and I didn’t have any doubt in my mind. I just wished we would have had a clock. I really think that was the main issue.”
