CM Punk is no stranger to championship gold and he added another title to his impressive resume on Monday when he defeated Sami Zayn to win the Undisputed WWE Championship. Zayn was originally supposed to defend the title against Cody Rhodes, but Rhodes was replaced by CM Punk after The American Nightmare was attacked by Gunther at the beginning of the show.
Following CM Punk’s Undisputed WWE Championship win on Monday Night Raw, John Cena took to social media to post a photo of CM Punk in his Doctor of Punkanomics gear on Instagram:
John Cena has a long history with CM Punk as they’ve clashed many times throughout their respective careers. The two stars last faced off at Night of Champions last year when Cena successfully defended the Undisputed WWE Championship against Punk in the main event.
Cena retired from in-ring competition in December of 2025 when he was defeated by Gunther at Saturday Night’s Main Event. Even though Cena is retired he’s still actively involved with WWE. The 17 time world champion last appeared on WWE programming in May when he announced the John Cena Classic at Backlash. Since then Cena has admitted that the John Cena Classic is still a work in progress, and no solid details regarding a location or date for the event have been confirmed as of this writing.
