John Cena is now a 16-time World Champion, at the Royal Rumble this past week he made history when he equaled Ric Flair’s record Championship haul, and now it seems that he could go one better than The Nature Boy.
Many sources are reporting that WWE downplayed Cena’s record breaking win because of the negative reaction that they would get and because there could well be plans for him to make it 17 before long.
The plan to give John Cena the title in the first place is thought to have been a controversial one especially since it didn’t fully make sense. AJ Styles has controlled SmackDown for the past few months, ever since he won the title from Dean Ambrose and he has arguably been the WWE superstar of the year for 2016.
Last time John Cena was seen in WWE he failed to capture the WWE Championship at No Mercy, so why is he allowed to return and demand a Championship match when he lost to the Champion in the first place? Answer? Because he’s John Cena. Cena does what he wants because nobody in WWE will stop him.
WWE know that Cena is a pull and they know that he has become an attraction, so despite the fact that The Champ is now considered a part time superstar, it seems that he has full control of what WWE does with his character.
Cena’s entire build up was to say that AJ wasn’t good enough to be in the ring with him, but AJ has been the best superstar in 2016. This means that basically if AJ isn’t good enough then no one on the roster is good enough, so once again John Cena is proving that even if he isn’t on WWE TV all the time, he is still their go-to man.
WWE have made a point of saying that there is no superstar that is bigger than WWE, they pointed that out with CM Punk but it seems that they failed to point out that John Cena has already become much bigger than the company.
Cena is the only star who is allowed to cut impromptu promos at house shows and he is the only star who is allowed to walk away from the company and return four months later and demand a title match. Much like when he left to get surgery and he returned to take the World Championship a few years ago.
It seems that WWE panic without Cena and always default back to giving him a Championship. This could well be more of an argument for the fact that WWE don’t trust their own creations, but instead they prefer to always gamble on Cena because he gets the job done.
That being said, John Cena made history at the Rumble and it seems that not that many people cared. It was a foregone conclusion that when the chips were on the table WWE were always going to push towards the WWE legend rather than the TNA one.
This was AJ’s chance to prove how good he was and what a fantastic match it was, the issue is, WWE got the result wrong. AJ has beaten Cena before and Cena had then been able to take that much time away and defeat him, the consistency in the the company right now is appalling.
It could well end up being Cena versus Randy Orton at WrestleMania now as well, which is something that the WWE Universe have definitely never seen before, oh wait. It seems that even though WWE has talked about the future and the fact that they now have the strength and depth when it comes to their NXT roster, they will always default back to the old guard because they don’t feel as though the new stars can put on the same show.
There is no doubt that John Cena has become a huge superstar, but the fact that WWE are allowing him to basically book himself is appalling, no one in that company should be able to dictate what they will and wont do regardless of their stature. That Rumble win was a shocking decision and hopefully WWE don’t take it further and allow Cena to make history with a 17th reign, because that would definitely be sending out the wrong message.
The day retires will be glorious.
