jinder mahal

Summer is just about here which means that WWE will be looking to kick off some big storylines as they build toward the biggest party of the summer, SummerSlam. It looks like the company has big plans for their title matches, as it’s been rumored for months that Braun Strowman will be challenging Brock Lesnar for the Universal Championship, and a former champion is penciled in to face Jinder Mahal for the WWE Championship.

Sportskeeda is reporting that current plans call for none other than 16 time WWE World Champion John Cena to step up and challenge Jinder Mahal for the belt at SummerSlam in August.

John Cena last wrestled at WrestleMania 33 in April where he teamed up with Nikki Bella to take on The Miz and Maryse. Although he hasn’t appeared on WWE programming since, it’s been confirmed that he will be returning to SmackDown Live on July 4th.

The report also notes that Cena will likely kick off an angle with Jinder Mahal upon his return, but the angle will not be Mahal’s main feud in July, as he’s expected to feud with another superstar leading up to a title match at Battleground.

As for who his Battleground opponent will be, it hasn’t been decided if he will continue to feud with Randy Orton, or move on to a mini-feud with former WWE Champion AJ Styles.

Jinder is currently scheduled to defend his WWE Championship against Randy Orton at Money in the Bank, and it looks like WWE is dedicated to keeping the belt on the Maharaja for the foreseeable future.
