Over the years fans have seen many legendary wrestlers win the WWE Championship and back in 1994 Kevin Nash defeated Bob Backlund to win the belt for the first time in his career when he defeated him at Madison Square Garden. Bob Backlund held the title for 2,135 days and it sounds like some people were unhappy with the title change.

WWE Hall of Famer Jim Ross addressed the title change on his Grilling JR podcast, and he noted that there was some heat on Kevin Nash after he ended Backlund’s long reign.

“That got some heat on Kevin by some of the guys in the locker room because Backlund was a legendary figure, long, long-time champion, very popular guy. Beating Bobby in the Garden, where he had had some of his greatest successes was a shocker, especially amplified when Bob did the favor in eight seconds. So a lot of the talents didn’t understand that.”

Kevin Nash went on to hold the title for almost a year, but Jim Ross added that he found more success after moving away from the Diesel character when he said, “I don’t think Diesel was that over,” Ross said. “He was the most over [at that point] than he had ever been in his career. But, I didn’t think that the transition from Diesel to Kevin Nash was anything but good.”
