Professional wrestling can certainly take its toll on the body and no one can wrestle forever. Rey Mysterio has been lucky enough to have a long career in the world of professional wrestling, but it’s safe to say that Rey has more matches behind him that he does in front of him. The former WWE Champion is currently 50 years old and the clock seems to be ticking on his in-ring career.

During a recent interview with LA PLATICA, Rey talked about his future plans, and he openly admitted that he’s “really close” to retiring from professional wrestling.

“Oh, it’s definitely really close [retirement]. It’s really close, but at the same time, I’m so motivated. A lot of people ask me, ‘What keeps you going?’ I think that once my son started to wrestle, that kind of pushed me to continue, ’cause I was really getting very close to calling it quits, but that just kind of gave me that second wind, and it pushed me to keep going. To be honest, I know I’m going to still enjoy it when I retire, but I’m going to have to tap out. I still love what I do and I always have.”

Mysterio was originally set to face off against El Grande Americano at WrestleMania 41 back in April. Unfortunately he had to be pulled from the show due to a groin injury, but Rey indicated that he’s hoping to return in August.

“I tore my groin a day before WrestleMania, from my left side, which I would say is my weakest side because I’ve had probably 11 ACL tears and meniscus [issues]. This knee is pretty bad. [It’s] bone-on-bone,” Mysterio said. “I started my [physical therapy], not to mention I had a busted eardrum as well so I fixed that during my time off. I’m on the road to recovery. I should be back, hopefully, by August.”
