Professional wrestling is a funny place sometimes. One minute you can be working towns like always and the next you’re on a big show. The same can also be said in reverse as well. You never really know where you will find someone if given the right situation and it looks like WWE is surprising us all once again.
Rockstar Spud was a well-known star on Impact Wrestling and a two-time X Division Champion. Now he is the new 205 Live General Manager. Only he won’t be called Rockstar Spud anymore.
The British Bootcamp winner was introduced by Daniel Bryan after a speech to cap off the big Royal Rumble weekend in Philly.
Spud came out with Daniel Bryan at the beginning of the show rather unceremoniously and stood there in a green suit and a black bow tie while D-Bry introduced him as Drake Maverick as people continued to chant “Rockstar Spud.” The commentary team acknowledged he was once known as Rockstar Spud and repeated the name twice to the one time “Drake Maverick” was spoken.
Maverick said 205 Live needs a new champion and announced a tournament which will culminate at WrestleMania. Then he announced two first-round matches for the new Cruiserweight Tournament. He was really killing it on the microphone hyping the matches to come and the role of GM seemed to suit him well.
He introduced himself once more as Drake Maverick and started the tournament. There’s a pretty good chance Drake will eventually get in the ring considering the fact he’s a pretty good wrestler. But at this point, the 35-year-old Superstar expressed his gratitude to Daniel Bryan for the opportunity to be 205 Live General Manager.
We might miss calling him Rockstar Spud, but as they noted on commentary, “new position, new name.” Who knows what this will lead to but in the meantime, 205 Live was worth a watch this week.
