Finn Balor made his main roster debut earlier this year, and he made history when he became the first ever WWE Universal Champion at SummerSlam. Unfortunately for Finn Balor he was injured during the match, and he had to relinquish the title the next night on Raw. Balor later had surgery to repair his injured shoulder, and he’s currently out of action.
Finn Balor has been recovering for a few months now, and fans are anxiously awaiting his return. Recovery seems to be going well, and during a recent interview with ESPN Balor acknowledged that he’s rumored for a surprise entrant spot in the 2017 Royal Rumble.
“You know, that’s obviously a huge rumor, and I would never be one to fuel the rumor mills,” he said with a smile. “But to be a surprise entrant in the Rumble would be a huge moment for me. I’m sure it would create quite a buzz. But right now, with the condition my shoulder is in, I’m not willing to risk sustaining any more long-term injury, just for the sake of two or three weeks. Since I got hurt, it was six months [out]. The target was to be back for WrestleMania. Everything’s on plan, everything’s on schedule.”
However, the first ever Universal Champion also teased that he could be tempted to make his way down to the ring for a shot at glory in the Royal Rumble match if he was asked by Vince McMahon himself.
“If the day of the Royal Rumble Vince McMahon says, ‘You got your gear with you?’ then I’m sure I’ll be around,” he said with a smile. But pointing to his injured shoulder, he added, “It’s not something I want to risk unless I’m 100 percent confident that this is 100 percent.”
Most wrestling fans would likely agree that it would be great to see Finn Balor make his WWE return at the Royal Rumble. But if the push he was receiving before he was injured is any indication, then it appears that WWE has big plans for Balor going forward. At this point in his career it’s probably just best that Balor waits until he’s fully healed before he returns to the ring.
The 2017 Royal Rumble match is shaping up to be a huge event as it’s set to take place from the Alamodome in San Antonio, TX, in January. So far Goldberg and Brock Lesnar have been confirmed for the Royal Rumble match, and it’s rumored that WWE is discussing a WWE Championship match that would see AJ Styles defend his title against The Undertaker.
