Baron Corbin was on his way to becoming a champion on SmackDown Live. He held the Money In The Bank briefcase with authority and Vince McMahon was very much behind The Lone Wolf’s push. Then things kind of spiraled downward for Baron Corbin. He lost his Money In The Bank contract when he failed to win the WWE Title after cashing in and he put Cena over clean at SummerSlam.
It’s a shame too because he’s got the look and move set to draw heat. He has gotten way better since debuting on the main roster too. Considering the fact he debuted by winning the Andre The Giant Memorial Battle Royal is saying something as well.
But Baron Corbin lost his SummerSlam encounter against John Cena without even kicking out of an AA, and many people are left wondering what happened to The Lone Wolf’s push.
“Yeah, [Baron Corbin’s] definitely being punished there’s not even a question now,” Dave Meltzer said on Wrestling Observer Radio. “Even if he had lost the match — I was expecting him to lose the match because it’s John Cena. But I didn’t expect him to lose that kind of a match. This was a match where you’re an afterthought.”
“It’s not like there’s ways to do it to protect them and there’s a million ways that they could do that and they didn’t do any of it. It was just like, ‘you’re an afterthought buddy, you’re not in our plans… you’re just a guy.’ And if they call up Bobby Roode and put him on SmackDown that might be the spot that he gets.”
“Maybe not, who knows. I mean Vince [McMahon] still thinks a lot of [Baron Corbin] and I think he’s got potential — I don’t think he’s ready to be a top guy and you know we’ll see what happens. But yeah, they didn’t do him any favors at all and they didn’t do him any favors on Tuesday either so him and Enzo — you know what I mean? Him and Enzo.”
